Greeting,
This article/posting is very exciting to us at Phoenix Communities. One of our goals is to set up 3-4 micro-grids in inner-cities and poor rural communities throughout the country. Our first project is call TGAP --> The Gates Ave Project. Gates Ave is the most densely populated area of central Brooklyn.

Not being engineers, but having vision, we have spent the better part of last year in org development and getting up to speed in this arena. It has been very very exciting indeed.

We need help. We need resources that can help bring our first project to developing and completing it's first phase, and qualified persons who just might be interested in our grid-project endeavors.

Can you help?

Sincerely,

Sanyakhu-Sheps Amare'
Executive Director, Phoenix Communities

antonia:

Okay, I've read the entire blog. And found it incredibly fascinating. I wish that others were reading it, and posting their comments, as i would dearly love to see how others react to your impressions of your trip to the States on this Fellowship. I only began to figure out how I could comment on each entry, but by that time i was close to the first day, and figured I'd simply go to the last and tell you -- thank you. I've learned a lot, and will check back regularly to see what more I can garner.

Dear Antonia
Here is Marcelo, a MNP2007 EF fellow from Brazil. Congratulations and good luck during your fellowship. Your blog makes me really nostalgic...
I work on nanoscience and nanotechnology (Physics), and I also work on public perception of science, science communication and science popularization. I think that we have a lot of common interests... I will follow your blog from here regularly.
Please, enjoy your time there as much as possible. It is a wonderful experience!!!
Best regards,
Marcelo

Sally the chemist loved the idea of linking enterprise centres with schools. In our Belgium-Netherlands cross-border programme, we have a great project doing similar things - www.procesindustrie2010.nl - all in Dutch of course. Basically, the region realised that it desperately needed new chemists coming through, and therefore targeted schools. The project featured: (a) Knowledge centres where sophisticated equipment is available for Flemish and Dutch companies to train staff and test materials; (b) Joint campaigns to motivate students to study sciences. At primary level, a campaign called “Mooi en Cool met Chemie” (literally: Nice and Cool with Chemistry”) involved school students in practical experiments such as making hair gel or bathing salts; and (c) Seminars with teachers and education authorities designing curricula, to promote courses matching the needs of the processing industry.

Maybe we should look more at linking some of these actions across the Atlantic - there must be so much experience that could be exchanged in these areas.
